Just Because it’s Permissible Doesn’t Mean it’s Beneficial

May 5, 2026

My husband and I were recently on a cruise for our 25th anniversary, and as some of you may know on cruises there is food EVERYWHERE and all the time! It was really interesting to me because for one the food was okay but not great, and I think this had more to do with me than them. Many years ago when we were on a cruise I think I gained 10lbs in one week. YIKES! It was like, because it was available I ate it and my taste buds were at a very different place then.

Since being on this health journey and with new and improved tasted buds, things that should have been “delicious and oh so tempting” were not. It’s funny because I didn’t know that you could actually change your taste. Things that I thought tasted horrible in the past I actually love now, like beets, WHO KNEW! I knew they are supposed to be really good for you, so every few years I would try them.

I was at a friends house and they are mostly vegan. She was peeling beets for dinner. I asked if I could have a slice of the raw beet to try it once again and bingo! I love them!

I know that for some things you actually have to make a conscious choice to add them into your pallet. Like the I mentioned that I knew that beets were good for me and I knew they were going to be beneficial to my health, so I decided to keep trying.

As I was observing people on the cruise, it was plates of food upon food. I think sometimes because it’s available we think we have to have it or should have it especially if it seems “free”. It was amazing to see how much food was consumed and how much was left on plates just because.

I am talking mostly about food here but this can pertain to many things. A good question to ask ourselves is, what have we given ourselves permission to that really isn’t what is God’s best for us? Now I love a good glass of wine every now and again but just because it’s permissible and even somewhat beneficial doesn’t mean it’s something I should have everyday.

As far as food goes I think it’s time to involve the Lord into our process. We can ask him to help us know when to stop eating, how much to serve on our plates and even what to be eating.

Guess what, I bet he’ll even include a piece of chocolate cake every now and again!

We are so privalidge in our lifetime to have so many flavors and varieties that we can make better choices for our bodies and our taste buds.

So here’s to good choices!

Blessings,

Just ME

Recipe:

Beet salad

Mixed greens

Pickled beets ( I like the whole ones they sell at Sprouts in a box in the produce section)

Feta cheese

Walnuts

Dressing: 4 tbls of olive oil, one tbls of balsamic of your choice, pinch of salt, honey to taste and a tbls of brown mustard. Put all in a small jar with lid and shake (the jar)

I usually make these individually, so you put how much you want of each.

Enjoy!

One of my fond childhood memories was helping my mom pickle beets. She made me feel special because my little hand would fit in the canning jars. I still enjoy eating pickled beets. A simple ‘recipe’ if you can call it that is I like to pick up a bunch of 2-3 fresh beets and clean them a put them in Instapot with just enough water to steam them. Take them out, slip skins and dice and toss in the fridge. You can add to salads or add butter for a quick side or put some balsamic vinegar on them and let them sit for a we he before serving. Enjoy!

I myself is on a health journey! I have lost a total of 20lbs I used to think sweet potatoes were gross and I absolutely love them now either as a baked potato or just diced up in the oven with a lil salt. My taste buds have definitely changed also. When u start a health journey the foods I normally wouldn’t eat on a daily basis, I actually eat on a daily basis and it has helped me so much!
Love you

RIGHTTTTT! Congrats on the weight loss. I’m no longer in a place where I’m in a rush to lose weight. I know if I am doing the right things it will come and I am grateful!
Love you!
